John McNeish
John is a 5th year integrated master’s student from the Isle of Arran undertaking a research project in the Adam’s group. His project will focus on Fmoc-protected phenylalanine derivatives and their ability to self-assemble into micellar and supramolecular structures via π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions upon exposure to a salt trigger. Their morphology, however, is highly sensitive to environmental factors such as pH, ionic strength and thermal history. Therefore, we aim to investigate how different salts influence the micellar aggregation and rheology of selected Fmoc-Phenylalanine derivatives and to establish a mechanistic understanding of ionic effects on self-assembly, providing insight for the design of salt-responsive nanostructures.
